I mentioned in a previous post that Pete and I did a detox at the beginning of January, and have received several questions about it. So here are some words about the detox, what it was, and how that went.
We originally did our first detox last summer and decided to do it again in January. I signed up for a free program through Life Time Fitness last year, but did it on my own this time. The Lifetime detox was an online program and was pretty much hands-off, but offered support in the form of daily emails and a website with lots of resources, Q&A’s and videos. You could contact a coach if needed, but I never did that. They also had products that they sold (shakes, etc.) that I did not purchase. I made my own protein shakes at home.
Basically, the detox has you stop eating all of the food groups that cause inflammation in the body. So that means none of the following:
- Dairy & eggs
- Sweetened fruits or juices
- Peanuts & peanut butter
- Shellfish & tuna
- Processed and refined foods like hot dogs, lunch meats, margarine & butter, ketchup and other condiments
As you can see, that doesn’t leave a ton of options for what you CAN eat. However, there were recipes and resources on the website to help plan out meals and cope. And I have a very large recipe index, so I was able to plan things out without too much problem.
It’s a challenge, to be sure. You end up eating mostly veggies and lean meats, plus protein smoothies and fresh fruits. But honestly, two weeks isn’t that long, and I enjoyed the results. Plus, it helped me realize that there are certain foods that impact my body negatively when I eat them. So now that I’m aware, I can monitor what I’m eating to minimize those issues.
Since hitting my reset button on January 2nd, I’ve lost 11 pounds and stayed on a workout routine that has me back on track. I feel so much better and think that I’m on track to hit my health and wellness goals for 2018!
Don’t be afraid to hit your own reset button – whether it is for your health or some other part of your life, there’s no time like NOW to make a change and work toward your goals!
*Please note that this detox was not physician supervised and I don’t recommend it for everyone. I’m not a fan of extreme diets and this was only a two-week challenge for myself designed to kick-start a year of healthy eating and exercise. Here is a link to the Life Time Fitness product.
