Lunchables are a great idea. Genius. I wish I’d thought of them. My kids grew up loving the lunchables and literally begging for them any time we went to the store.
The problem was that they were a bit on the pricy side. And I wasn’t really sure about what was in them. There has to be a lot of “stuff” in the food to allow it to keep for so long, and also for it to be mass produced. But it was easy, so I said “What the heck” again and again.
Last Fall I started packing extra snacks for the girls when they were staying after school to run cross country. They needed real food with protein and calories. (They were eating a ton, because they were running 35+ miles a week – something I can only dream of having the stamina to do.) And I started packing cheese and crackers, then adding in some pepperoni. That got me to thinking…
So I made up my own Lunchable-like meal. I went with pizza, because who doesn’t love make-your-own-pizza?
It was a hit! The girls liked it, aside from the fact that it took a bit longer to eat than other lunches (high school kids these days only get about 35 minutes to eat lunch.)
So give it a shot! Pick up some bread rounds, some canned or jarred tomato sauce, shredded cheese and mini-pepperoni. It was pretty simple to put together, and I suppose you could use whatever toppings your kid liked. Just don’t forget a spoon or knife to spread the sauce with!
