We used to have a smaller kitchen/dining/living area than we have now, and one of the things I really liked about it was that you simply couldn’t not all sit together for dinner. There just wasn’t anywhere else to sit but at the table.
Also, there was no tv on the whole kitchen level of the house. So if you were eating, you were not watching Jeopardy or Friends, or the news – you were watching other people eat.
We remodeled a few years ago and added on so that now we have a nice spacious and open area for our kitchen, dining, bar, living space. It is delightful! I can watch sports from standing at the kitchen counter prepping food, the kids can do homework on the island, and the dogs can be playing in the living room. So much space!
But one thing that we didn’t change was that dining table – it’s still in there, and there is still a dedicated area for sitting down to eat dinner. We eat at that table together nearly every night.
And here’s the magic thing about it – not a single person complains about it.
Oh, sure. Every now and then dinner will be ready in the middle of Jeopardy, but thanks to the modern miracle known as DVR, they can hit pause and go back to it later.
That dinner table is one of my favorite places in the house!
This is where we hear about the funny, crazy, stressful, busy, hard, sad, confusing parts of everyone’s lives. The kids open up. We talk sports. Discuss homework. Have family meetings. Pete sings and acts silly. All while eating dinner.
It is no secret that I really like food. I mean, you’ll never see me miss a meal. And I just love to cook for the family. But what often makes my food really, REALLY GOOD, is that we’re eating it at that dinner table. Together.
